Luck and bad luck and how to deal with them in online poker games
I’ve so far had a chance to talk about poker online with a considerable number of people, and I’ve found out that many believe that winning internet poker is 50% experience and 50% luck.
When I told this to a good friend, who also happens to be a professional poker texas holdem player, he said it’s time for me to learn a few things about luck.
He explained to me that while one cannot control luck, because everybody has days where nothing goes, be it online poker games, Roulette, Black-jack or craps, in fact anybody who participates in the gambling world, the question is not when good luck makes a comeback, but rather how to deal with bad luck by changing the odds in my favor. I can either give in to a streak of loses or choose to be wise, take less chances and minimize losses to as best I can. If I am dealt a really bad hand, I can try to ignore the fact that it’s bad luck, think logically and perhaps even come out on top – the beauty of poker is that any hand can win, because everything is a matter of skill – if I play Aggressively and raise the bet I can scare the players around me, make all of them quit and thus win despite being unlucky.
But it’s also important to remember that you shouldn’t push your luck to much, and you shouldn’t find yourself in a situation where you game or you profit is totally dependent on luck – it’s always better to avoid such situations in the first place, and always to try and base your winning strategy on personal abilities instead of luck.
It’s also important to remember that luck is temporary, and that it balances itself eventually. It has already happened before – Great poker players became impoverished while beginners got rich – but in the long run we are all equally lucky or unlucky. What makes a difference is how you deal with your fortunes in any given moment.
